7 Tips For A More Enjoyable Moving Day
As a moving company, we do as much as we can, but, as most realize, there are still a lot of responsibilities left to the homeowners. While many homeowners understand this, they also find themselves wondering what types of things they need to do prior to their moving day in order to facilitate a smooth move.
Here are our suggestions:
1. Hire a great moving company
This might seem a bit obvious coming from a moving company, but you have to understand that moving companies are not all created equal. You don’t want to just hire any moving company – it’s important to hire a great one. Having a trustworthy moving company working with you that is able to handle the difficult elements of your move will be instrumental in keeping your moving day free of problems and stress.
You need to hire a team that will communicate with you, plan with you, be receptive to your requests, know how to organize a move, and that will plan ahead accordingly. Not only that, but they also need to be timely, efficient, and careful with your belongings. 2. Take this opportunity to purge
It’s no use packing, hauling, loading, and unloading boxes of things that you don’t actually need. The packing process is a prime time to sort through all of your belongings and throw out, give away, or sell any of those items that you haven’t used in months, or even years.
As a general rule, if you haven’t even thought about using it, wearing it, or finding it for a very long time, you probably don’t need it. This isn’t to say that you should throw away keepsakes and precious items of remembrance, but that untouched electric keyboard in the closet, your daughter’s worn-out clothing, or your son’s hiking boots that he outgrew last summer should probably find their way to a trash bin or to into the hands of a new owner.
3. Label and organize well
After your move, the unpacking process might take a while. It’s important to know which boxes you will need to open, and which ones can be left for next week’s unpacking spree. Without proper organization and labeling, it’s next to impossible to have a smooth and efficient transition into your new living space. Therefore, consider labeling and organizing in the following ways:
- Box items from the same room into the same box
- Box like-purposed items in the same box (unless they’re from separate rooms)
- Label each box with a general description of its contents
- Label each box with the room it should be taken to during the unloading process
- If necessary, keep a detailed inventory of the contents of each box on a separate spreadsheet.
4. Pack properly
It’s imperative that you pack your items well. So many times homeowners don’t take adequate precautions when packing their boxes, only to find that they didn’t weather the moving process as well as they had hoped. Make sure you have enough packing materials and boxes so that you’re able to generously use them wherever they’re needed.
Great packing products include:
- Sturdy boxes or totes
- Packing paper
- Packing foam
- Plastic wrap rolls
- Bubble wrap
- Dish packing sets
- Labeling materials
- Tape
5. Hire a packing service

6. Be prepared to need a storage option
Especially for those downsizing to a smaller living situation, it’s easy to find that you don’t actually have as much room in your new house as your originally expected. Many of our clients found that all of their belongings and furniture wouldn’t actually fit and that they needed to rent a storage service while they sorted through their things and organized their space.
As an extra convenience for our clients, our moving company also offers storage services. These services are far more convenient and higher-quality than those that you would receive at your typical storage service. Usually, individuals would rent a storage unit that isn’t climate controlled – but our storage warehouse is, providing a much safer environment for your precious belongings and expensive furniture.
In addition, we will also keep your furniture wrapped for you as it sits in the storage unit. If we transitioned your belongings into a typical storage unit, we would need to unwrap your items in order to save our packing and wrapping materials to use again. However, if you store your items with us, we will leave them safely wrapped in our protective coverings until you’re ready to use them. This way, your items are kept safe and secure in a climate-controlled and convenient location.
Our storage warehouse is located in Redmond, and we would be happy to offer you as much space as you need (depending upon availability, of course).
7. Hire someone to watch your pets
Even after you’ve hired a moving service, the moving day can tend to be quick-paced and busy for everyone. This can create a trying environment for pets, as they’re not used to having strangers and lots of activity in their living areas. So, we would suggest that you have a friend or a hiring service to watch your pets for the day. It’s easy to drop them off in the morning and pick them up in the evening after the move is over. This will save your much-loved pets a lot of stress and keep them out from underfoot during the moving process.
